How to Fulfil Your Life’s Purpose!

Published Date : May 1, 2019

Mark Twain once famously said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why”. In juxtaposition with all the bad that’s happening in the world today, there is also a rising wave of spirituality. One of the most burning questions and one that people noticeably struggle with on a personal level is “WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MY LIFE?” It’s indeed a very profound question, and by virtue of its innate complexity is automatically attached to an elusive answer. However, a grand salute is in order for all those who have reached that level of spiritual questioning.

You see, there’s really no perfect answer to this question, and so, the trick is not to dwell too much on the question itself. As long as we are in human form, we can almost never have all the answers of the spiritual realm. The soul’s purpose has a knack for revealing itself, not in totality, but, in every living and breathing moment. Consider every moment therefore as opportunity for being the best version of yourself that you possibly can. Don’t beat yourself to death for slip-ups, but do make mental note of them, and try to do better the next time around.

One struggle and even turmoil that the spiritual bent of mind tend to have is “I must provide for my family… I have no time to ponder about and much less pursue spiritual practices”! If you think about it, this is just the mind’s tendency to put up barriers with excuses that make us feel better. And, if you are really committed, please remember that the only place you can start is NOW!

It’s true that the sooner we start thinking about the spiritual aspect of our beings, the easier it will be to align our inevitably human lives and nature with our much more difficult-to-get-in-touch-with spiritual selves. That’s why it’s so important to teach our young about this aspect of life too. Marc Anthony once said, “If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.” If you realise this before you take up your profession, your whole outlook and mood on a daily basis will be a lot more conducive to imbibing an elevated aura and interacting positively with associates, customers, people up and down the hierarchical structure at work, family and just about everyone you come across. If you’ve missed the boat here, try to remember that YOU chose your profession for reasons of “a more secure future”, etc, or perhaps YOU gave in to the pressure from parents to do so, and if there’s something you can do just now to rectify it, do so. If there isn’t, learn to “like it or lump it”! Since time immemorial, people have squandered time, energy and health on playing the blame-game. We should realise we all need to sum up the courage to exercise our own free will, and if we haven’t in the past – it’s never too late!

An appeal to parents is in order here, going forward – You are only a guiding force for your children, and should not be in tyrannical control of their lives and choices. Too many people spend their lives in regret for passions they let go of, most specifically in the areas of one’s life’s work and lost loves! Kahlil Gibran once said, “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you. And, though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts”… “You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.” There’s no one we owe more to than the ones in our intimate life. Do “good” by the people around you, and you will surely be moving towards spiritual salvation!

The answer to the question of “What is my soul’s purpose?” is simply to align your interests and talents with the burning needs of the world or even just the intimate, individual worlds of the people around you. While it’s true that some people are in a better position to do good on a large scale than others—these are people in positions of great influence—the reality is that all you have to do to accumulate good karma is to constantly be attune to what good you can do with what you have, where you are and whomever crosses your path.

Are you a jewellery manufacturer? What are you doing to better the predicament of your workers, and workers of the industry at large?; Are you a doctor? Do you always act with your patients’ interests above your own?; Have too many people made you feel you are “just a housewife”? – The reality is that you have one of the most important roles of anyone in the world—to help mould the character of beings you may be in charge of into considerate ones who will contribute to the world as you do!; Have you read an article about the plight of some people or children around the world, like maybe in Yemen? Ask yourself what you can do. In fact, keep asking yourself “What can I do?” Closing a tap quickly in mindfulness of the people starved of water is a good-deed enough!

Try this affirmation of sorts – “There’s a solution to every problem!”, and a solution of some sort is very likely to drop into your lap or pop into your head. Don’t forget to follow through with whatever action is within your reasonable capability.

One thing that is getting in the way of most people doing more to be in alignment with their soul’s calling and accumulating good karma is often-unintentionally controlling loved ones, or too much mental focus on unhappy situations in life. Try not to give in to pressure to be anything other than your true self. That’s the only route to true happiness. Consider this small example – If your spouse or friend is hurrying you along when every bone in your body is telling you to stop and offer something to a starving beggar, please try not to give in to the pressure. Those “bones” are more than likely your soul talking to you. The karma of your acts, unfortunately, will be yours to share. Too many steer away from their soul’s voice because the voices of human beings around are much too much louder!

We must also try to very gently influence people around us to do the right thing towards issues we are passionate about – be it water wastage, environmental degradation, animal cruelty, charitable contributions, or anything else. However, there will always be some people who are too averse to positive change. Many along our paths are completely apathetic, and likely always will be! We must give up with them in interest of our own sanity and focus time on more receptive individuals. One way or another we will all have to face our “Books of Accounts”. The trick in maintaining a good balance for ourselves is to not over-think questions like “Who am I?”; “Why am I here?” Your soul knows the answers already, but the human form has its limitations and usually cannot completely understand it all. Your higher self will guide you, if you never let go of the intention to do good at every moment!

Remember – There’s only one person in this world that you can fully control – and that’s your unique self. So, do celebrate yourself, strive to be the best version of yourself, move beyond your past, and assume upon yourself that positive glow that truly good and happy people always exude. Also, remember that while we are unique, we are all part of THE ONE UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS! We cannot send out to someone in the world a good or bad intention or act without facing a similar consequence. To quote Newton (in knowingly complete erroneous context), “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”!
